Embracing Our âRawkwardâ
My sweet southern friend Dixie coined the term rawkward (raw + awkward) a while back. As Dixie explains, the term describes how many of us, especially those of us who are introverts, often show up in the world ârawkwardly.â For Dixie, this is because the longer she is in recovery, the less capable she is of participating in small talk. Her tendency these days is to dive right into soulful presence, which, as she observes, can weird people out a little bitâor a lot. Iâve observed this too. The social comfort zone for so many is to talk about the weather, current events, the small details of our lives. The magic of conversation for me happens when I invite or am invited to connect more deeply. I prefer to share or ask questions about what is lighting up our lives, or what new things about ourselves we have learned, or simply how our heart is doing on any given day. It does feel ârawkwardâ to initiate or participate in such authentic conversation. Letâs do it anyway.
I have too many big feelings and big ideas to waste time on small talk.
